The Niger State government has urged villagers in Shiroro Local Government Area to temporarily suspend farming activities due to the threat of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted by bandits. The government announced that military forces are currently conducting operations to identify and safely detonate these explosives.
State Commissioner for Homeland Security, Bello Abdullahi, issued the warning on Monday during the Base Socio-Cultural Activities event at the 013 Quick Response Force of the Nigerian Air Force in Minna. Abdullahi specifically cautioned residents of Basa in Shiroro LGA, highlighting the dangers posed by concealed explosives in farmlands.
“This is a life-threatening situation,” Abdullahi said. “We strongly advise farmers to stay off their farms until the military completes clearing suspected mine-laden areas to ensure safety for all.” He added that the Niger State government is relying heavily on military intervention to tackle the escalating threats posed by banditry and terrorism.
Last year, several incidents involving IEDs in the region led to casualties, with three deaths recorded during explosions in Bassa on December 19, 2024. In addition to fatalities, many others suffered injuries, raising alarm over the increasing use of explosives by bandits in the area.
Representing Governor Mohammed Bago at the event, Abdullahi reiterated the administration’s commitment to supporting the military’s efforts to restore safety in affected communities. He assured residents that the government is prioritizing their security and well-being.
Meanwhile, Group Captain Austine Idoko, Commander of the 013 Quick Response Force, reassured attendees of the military’s determination to continue operations aimed at eradicating terrorism and ensuring stability in Niger State.
