China has reiterated its commitment to advancing its partnership with Nigeria, as trade between the two nations surpassed $20 billion in 2024. Speaking during the Chinese New Year celebration in Abuja, Chinese Ambassador Yu Dunhai underscored Nigeria’s pivotal role in Africa and its global importance. The event, which brought together over 2,000 Nigerians and Chinese citizens, symbolised the deepening ties between the two countries.
Ambassador Dunhai highlighted the elevation of Nigeria-China relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership following President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to China. He noted that cultural and people-to-people exchanges are key pillars of this relationship, showcasing the importance of unity and collaboration. The ambassador expressed optimism that the strengthened partnership would drive mutual benefits, particularly in trade, where Nigeria has become China’s largest engineering contract market in Africa.
Dunhai emphasized the potential for further growth in trade, expressing a commitment to building on the $20 billion trade volume recorded last year. He pointed to Nigeria’s position as China’s second-largest export market and third-largest trade partner in Africa, noting that these achievements reflect the strong bilateral ties between the two nations.
The Forum for China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) also plays a significant role in advancing this partnership. Ambassador Dunhai mentioned plans to implement the “10 Action Partnerships” initiative, which aims to deliver tangible benefits to citizens of both nations. These partnerships span various sectors, including culture, tourism, and trade, further cementing the relationship between the two countries.
Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Oraelumo Raphael, commended China’s efforts in promoting cultural exchange. He stressed the importance of preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage while leveraging the goodwill extended by China to boost tourism and economic opportunities. Raphael likened the partnership to the symbolism of the Chinese New Year of the Snake, which signifies renewal and transformation.
Deputy Director of Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, Xu Tao, celebrated Nigeria’s cultural richness and economic potential. He praised Nigeria’s globally recognised Nollywood industry, historical sites, and iconic artefacts like the Benin bronzes. Tao noted that the collaboration between Nigeria and China is poised to create a future of shared prosperity, enriched by cultural and economic synergy.
