President Bola Tinubu has conveyed his condolences to the government and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran following the demise of President Ebrahim Raisi. This message was articulated in a statement by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, on Monday in Abuja.
Raisi, alongside Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and other officials, tragically perished in a helicopter crash.
The Presidential spokesperson stated that Tinubu expressed profound sorrow over this calamity, lauding Raisi as a leader dedicated to the advancement of Iran.
Ngelale mentioned that, in expressing sympathy to the grieving families, Tinubu prayed for the ongoing peace, stability, and prosperity of the Iranian nation.
“On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, the President ensures the Islamic Republic of Iran of Nigeria’s unwavering support and prayers during this time of mourning,” he conveyed.
Ebrahim Raisi, the 63-year-old president of Iran, tragically lost his life in a helicopter accident along with other officials. The crash took place in a mountainous, forested region of Iran. Raisi, a key figure in Iranian politics representing conservative and hardline factions, had served as president for almost three years prior to this tragedy.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei declared five days of official mourning and appointed Mohammad Mokhber as the temporary head of the country’s executive branch.
Iran is now obligated to conduct a presidential election within a maximum period of 50 days to select Raisi’s successor.
