The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has revealed that an investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the destruction of a man’s passport by his wife, identified as Favour Igiebor, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

According to the NIS Act of 2015 (as amended), Igiebor’s actions could potentially result in a jail term if she is found guilty. In a statement, the spokesperson for the NIS, Kenneth Udo, described Igiebor’s action as a violation of Nigerian law. The investigation was prompted by a video that went viral, showing Igiebor destroying a Nigerian Standard Passport, reportedly belonging to her husband, at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.

The NIS statement further elaborated, “The Nigeria Immigration Service has launched a formal investigation following the circulation of a video on social media showing a female traveler destroying a Nigerian Standard Passport at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.”

The recent incident involving the tearing of a legal document by a woman has sparked widespread condemnation. However, the woman, Mrs. Igiebor, has provided an explanation for her actions in a viral video. In the video, Mrs. Igiebor stated that her actions were prompted by the stress and difficulties she has faced in her relationship with her husband. She emphasized that her behavior was not that of a “mad woman,” but rather a response to the challenging circumstances she has endured.

Mrs. Igiebor further explained that she intentionally waited to carry out her actions until they had returned to Nigeria, rather than doing so in Europe, where she could have acted. She urged the public not to make judgments without understanding the full context of the situation, as she has faced significant family-related issues.

In response, the husband, who chose to remain anonymous, acknowledged his wife’s video statement but opted to refrain from making any further comments at this time, expressing his belief that the matter could be resolved within the family. The incident has raised concerns about the preservation of the dignity and integrity of the nation’s legal instruments. While the explanations provided by Mrs. Igiebor offer some context, the appropriate course of action and the implications of her behavior are still being deliberated.
