Nigerian authorities announced on Tuesday that they have dismantled a significant drug cartel responsible for manufacturing and distributing methamphetamine, just a week after another notable seizure of a cocaine syndicate run by a couple who packaged, distributed, and trafficked cocaine worth over US$1.3 million within and outside Nigeria.
These actions are part of Nigeria’s continuous efforts to combat the increasing trend of drug production and trafficking. Traditionally viewed as a crucial transit point, Africa’s most populous nation, with a population exceeding 200 million, has in recent years emerged as a substantial producer, consumer, and distributor of narcotics, as per the United Nations.
In a bid to further escalate the fight against drug offenses, the country is contemplating the implementation of capital punishment. Lawmakers in Abuja introduced this proposal in May, although it has encountered staunch opposition from some of their peers and human rights advocates, who are apprehensive about the irreversible nature of such a penalty, particularly in cases where innocent individuals might be erroneously convicted.
Presently, the maximum penalty for drug-related crimes is life imprisonment.
Despite the ongoing deliberations, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) persists in its relentless enforcement.
Just last week, they apprehended Agbakoba John Mmadu, aged 54, his wife Agbakoba Ijeoma Chinwe, aged 39, and their accomplice Okoye Ifeoma Maryjane.
On Tuesday morning, law enforcement officers raided the residence of Joachin Chikaodi Mbonu, aged 42, apprehending him and his associate. During the operation, they confiscated various quantities of methamphetamine, precursor chemicals, a pump-action gun, and cartridges, as per the agency’s report.
In the initial quarter of 2024, over 80 suspects were detained, and more than 3,000 kilograms of assorted drugs were seized. Furthermore, the convictions of over 50 offenders were secured, according to the UN.
These developments underscore Nigeria’s determined efforts to combat drug crimes amid evolving challenges and legislative debates over the appropriate measures to curb drug production and trafficking.
