Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, former representative of Delta North Senatorial District, has expressed strong reservations regarding Senator Ned Nwoko’s recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Nwoko, now representing Delta North, announced his move, citing frustrations with the PDP’s leadership in Delta State. However, Nwaoboshi warns that Nwoko’s motives may be more self-serving than strategic for the party’s growth.
In a statement, Nwaoboshi raised concerns about Nwoko’s alleged demands, including the dissolution of Delta State APC’s executive committee. He argued that such moves, if entertained, could destabilise the party’s structure and undermine democratic processes. “The Delta APC leadership was duly elected and has a mandate to complete its tenure,” Nwaoboshi said, urging the national leadership to resist any unconstitutional attempts to interfere with the party’s governance.
Nwaoboshi alleged that Nwoko’s defection might be part of a larger scheme to influence internal party affairs unfairly. He accused Nwoko of collaborating with certain elements in the presidency to advance his agenda, which could lead to unnecessary chaos within the Delta APC. According to Nwaoboshi, this could jeopardise the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections.
The former senator emphasised that any new entrant into the APC, including Nwoko, should adhere to established party procedures and respect its constitution. “The APC is a democratic institution with rules and procedures. Nwoko cannot expect to dictate terms immediately upon joining,” he said. He also cautioned against undermining the contributions of the current executive members, whose leadership he believes is vital to maintaining stability.
Nwoko’s defection marks a significant shift, as all three senators from Delta State are now APC members. However, this transition has not been without controversy. Critics like Nwaoboshi argue that while new members are welcome, their integration must align with the party’s principles to ensure cohesion rather than disruption.
Nwaoboshi reiterated his commitment to protecting the Delta APC from internal discord, urging the party’s leadership to stand firm against any actions that could harm its unity. He also called on Nwoko to build meaningful relationships within the party rather than pushing for drastic changes that could weaken its foundation.
