Ogun State Election: OGSIEC Rejects Alleged Local Government Election Schedule
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on WhatsappShare on EmailShare on Telegram

The Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) has moved to clarify recent reports circulating online regarding the scheduling of local government elections in the state. These reports claimed that elections for Ogun State’s 20 local governments and 236 wards were slated for October 26, 2024. However, OGSIEC has categorically denied setting any definitive date for these elections.

The confusion arose from a news article attributing statements to OGSIEC’s chairman in Ogun State, Babatunde Osibodu, purportedly announcing the election date. In response, OGSIEC issued an official statement on Tuesday countering these claims and labeling them as misinformation.

According to the statement, OGSIEC emphasized that the commission has not finalized a date for the upcoming local government elections. They underscored the importance of accurate information dissemination and cautioned against trusting unverified sources spreading false news.

The commission expressed concern over the spread of misinformation, labeling it as the work of individuals intentionally misleading the public. They urged residents of Ogun State to rely only on official announcements from OGSIEC regarding election schedules.

Furthermore, OGSIEC reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparency and fairness in the electoral process. They pledged to keep the public duly informed once a date for the local government elections is officially determined.

In addition to addressing the misinformation, OGSIEC highlighted the critical role of local governments as the third tier of government. They underscored the state government’s commitment, led by Governor Dapo Abiodun, to fostering democratic governance through free and fair elections at the grassroots level.

Governor Abiodun’s administration has been steadfast in recognizing the significance of local governments in promoting development and ensuring effective governance close to the people. The administration views the election of local government representatives as a crucial step towards enhancing community participation in decision-making processes.

The statement from OGSIEC resonates with ongoing efforts by the state government to strengthen democratic institutions and uphold the principles of good governance. By clarifying the misinformation surrounding the election schedule, OGSIEC aims to bolster public trust in the electoral process and safeguard the integrity of upcoming elections.

Moreover, OGSIEC assured stakeholders and the general public of its readiness to conduct credible elections once all necessary preparations are finalized. This includes ensuring adequate logistical arrangements, voter education initiatives, and compliance with electoral guidelines to guarantee a smooth and transparent electoral process.

The commission’s proactive stance in debunking false information reflects its commitment to upholding electoral integrity and safeguarding the democratic rights of Ogun State residents. By issuing timely clarifications, OGSIEC aims to prevent confusion and misinformation that could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

Looking ahead, OGSIEC remains focused on its mandate to facilitate the election of competent and accountable leaders at the local government level. They underscored the importance of public participation in the electoral process and encouraged eligible voters to actively engage in the upcoming elections.
