The Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has expressed hope that President Bola Tinubu’s planned visit to Enugu State today will pave the way for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The group voiced its optimism, citing the federal government’s evolving stance towards the Igbo people as a positive sign.
During his visit, President Tinubu is expected to commission key infrastructure projects initiated by Governor Peter Mbah’s administration. This visit marks a significant step in the development of the region, as it highlights the federal government’s engagement with the southeastern part of Nigeria.
Ohanaeze, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alex Ogbonnia, emphasized the growing sense of equity in the federal government’s approach towards the Igbo. The group urged the government to continue prioritizing fairness and justice, which they believe are essential for national peace and unity.
The statement stressed the importance of tackling issues of marginalization, insecurity, and deprivations faced by the southeastern region. Ohanaeze underscored that the development of any nation hinges on ensuring the social justice and inclusivity of all its groups, including the Igbo people.
While welcoming the planned visit, Ohanaeze called on President Tinubu to use this opportunity to order Nnamdi Kanu’s release, noting that such a gesture would solidify his legacy with the Igbo and the broader Nigerian populace.
