Former Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane has disclosed that the Nigeria Football Federation engaged in discussions with him regarding the coaching position for the Super Eagles. However, he declined the offer due to his strong emotional ties to South Africa.
The Super Eagles coaching vacancy has been a prominent subject of discussion in recent months following the departure of Jose Peseiro. Following the exit of the Portuguese manager, the NFF initiated a selection process, attracting numerous experienced candidates.
Nonetheless, the NFF ultimately selected Finidi George, who had previously served as an assistant coach and interim manager. Regrettably, the team’s performance under George’s leadership has not met expectations. Evidently, Finidi was not the primary choice for the NFF.
This revelation came to light as former Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns coach Mosimane disclosed that he was approached by former Nigerian footballer Jay-Jay Okocha and an NFF representative.
“The inquiries were originating from Nigeria, and discussions were underway. Jay-Jay Okocha spearheaded these efforts and made earnest pleas. However, considering the historical rivalry between South Africa and Nigeria, I found it difficult to entertain the notion of coaching the Super Eagles. It felt disloyal as I am deeply invested in seeing my home team succeed in the World Cup,” Mosimane shared with SNAWA.
“Nevertheless, one must acknowledge professional opportunities. It is impossible to disregard the chance to coach exceptional talents like Chukwueze and Osimhen, who are among the world’s finest players.
“In my assessment, Nigeria faces challenges in terms of tactical organization and strategy. The conundrum arises when there is an abundance of exceptional footballers at one’s disposal. This mirrors the situation in Brazil, where an excess of talent can pose dilemmas for the coach, resulting in impulsive decisions during matches. The lack of patience is evident when a match does not progress as expected, prompting hasty substitutions without proper consideration.
“I opted against accepting the coaching role with Nigeria due to my profound sentimental attachment to South Africa. The Nigerian Federation did not present a formal contract offer; the discussions remained informal and preliminary.
“In football, a formal contract offer must be extended and executed to solidify an agreement. In the absence of such a tangible commitment, negotiations remain inconclusive.”
At present, Mosimane is not actively being considered for the coaching position with the Super Eagles, despite his exceptional coaching record. Reports suggest that Portuguese manager Antonio Conceicao is being strongly considered for the role of technical director and may be appointed in the near future.
