The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has declared the title of Sarkin Sasa in the Akinyele Local
Government Area of Oyo State as null and void, stating it’s not recognised by Ibadan Traditional Chieftaincy Law.
This declaration was made during the Olubadan-In-Council meeting at Olubadan Palace, Oke Aremo, in Ibadan. The
controversy surrounding the Sarkin Sasa title began when the late title holder, Alhaji Haruna Maiyasin Kastina, passed away.
His son, Ahmed Haruna (Ciroma), was nominated as the new Sarkin Sasa by the family and traditional councils of the
17 Southern states without the Olubadan’s consent. However, the Olubadan has recognized Chief Akinade Ajani
Amusa as the legitimate Baale of Sasa land.
Oba Olakulehin emphasized that any individual or group in Sasa land must acknowledge the authority of the Baale of
Sasa land, Chief Akinade Ajani Amusa. Disobedience to his directive will be met with serious sanctions, considered an affront to the Olubadan stool.

The Olubadan’s declaration aims to clarify the leadership structure in Sasa land and assert traditional authority.
The Concerned Youths of Sasa had expressed concerns over the attempt to establish a Hausa-Fulani ruling dynasty
in Ibadanland. They argued that the title “Sarkin Sasa” is not recognized by the Chiefs Law of Oyo State and is, therefore, an illegality.
The youths urged the Olubadan to prevent this development, citing the need to protect the rights and interests of the
indigenous Yoruba people.
The Olubadan’s declaration has significant implications for the traditional leadership structure in Sasa land. It
reaffirms the authority of the Baale of Sasa land and emphasizes the importance of adhering to traditional norms and laws.
