Paetongtarn Shinawatra Elected Thailand’s New Prime Minister

Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the 37-year-old daughter of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, has been elected as Thailand’s new Prime Minister. Her selection follows the endorsement of a majority of lawmakers in the Thai parliament. This marks a significant moment in Thai politics, as Ms. Shinawatra steps into the role without prior experience in elected office.

Ms. Shinawatra, a billionaire heiress, has a high-profile background as the daughter of Thaksin Shinawatra, who served as Thailand’s Prime Minister from 2001 to 2006. Thaksin’s tenure was notable for its economic reforms and social programs, but he was ousted in a military coup. Despite his removal, he remained a key figure in Thai politics and continued to exert influence even while living in exile due to corruption charges.

Ms. Shinawatra’s political career began relatively recently. Before entering politics, she was involved in managing the family’s hotel business. Her role in the business empire helped her build a substantial public profile. Her entry into politics was marked by her work with the Pheu Thai party, a party founded by her father that has consistently been a dominant force in Thai elections.

The path to her current position became clearer when a court disqualified Prime Minister Srettha Thaksin from office. The court’s decision was based on Srettha Thaksin’s appointment of a cabinet member with a criminal conviction. This created an opportunity for Pheu Thai to push forward with Ms. Shinawatra as their candidate for Prime Minister.

The Pheu Thai party, along with its coalition partners, controls 314 seats in the 493-seat parliament. To become Prime Minister, Ms. Shinawatra needed the backing of more than half of the current lawmakers. Her ability to secure this support is seen as a testament to her growing influence and the strength of her party’s political network.

Known in Thailand by her nickname Aw Ung Ing, Ms. Shinawatra has been a prominent figure in recent elections. During the 2023 election campaign, she maintained a strong presence on the campaign trail despite being in the later stages of pregnancy with her second child. This dedication highlights her commitment to her political aspirations and to the future of her country.

Ms. Shinawatra graduated from Chulalongkorn University, one of Thailand’s most prestigious institutions, and later pursued international hotel management at the University of Surrey in England. Her educational background, combined with her experience in the family business, has shaped her approach to politics.

In a March 2022 interview, she expressed a shift in her priorities, stating that while her passion had initially been for the hotel industry, her perspective changed after becoming a mother. She emphasized her desire to improve the country’s living conditions for her children, reflecting her broader vision for Thailand.

Her appointment as Prime Minister is seen as a continuation of her father’s political legacy, but also as a new chapter for Thailand as she brings her own vision and experience to the role. The country watches closely as she takes on this significant leadership position.
