The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said it remains resilient and anchored in its grassroots support, despite recent defections and internal disagreements. PDP strong despite defections
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, made this known on Tuesday during an interview on ‘Prime Time’, a political programme on Arise Television.
Ologunagba dismissed claims that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is suffocating the PDP.
According to him, the APC’s policies have instead inflicted hardship and insecurity on Nigerians, which will shape the outcome of the 2027 general elections.
“When a governor defects, it’s a concern, but the strength of the PDP is not in governors — it’s in the people,” he said.
“If the PDP is dead, why is everyone so interested in it?”
He noted that the PDP has survived several political storms since 1999 and continues to maintain strong structures across all 36 states. PDP strong despite defections
Defections Driven by Intimidation, Not Ideology
The PDP spokesperson also reacted to the recent defection of Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State to the APC.
Ologunagba alleged that such moves were not driven by ideology or policy, but by personal interest, inducement, and intimidation allegedly orchestrated by the ruling party.
“People are no longer defecting because of policy or programmes. They are being coerced, intimidated, or induced,” he said.
He added that the PDP remains focused on rebuilding and reconnecting with Nigerians who are “fed up with hardship and poor governance.”
Meanwhile, Ologunagba expressed confidence that Nigerians will “vote their conscience” in 2027, given the current economic situation.
He said the PDP’s message of unity, stability, and people-first governance continues to resonate at the grassroots level.
“The APC may have governors today, but the PDP has the people. In the end, the people decide elections,” he said confidently.
