A prominent contender for the chairmanship of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State, Chief James Okpara, has expressed his appreciation for the party’s caucus in the state for designating the chairmanship position to Abia North in the upcoming state congress.
Following a state caucus meeting on Monday, the Abia PDP endorsed the suggestions of the Committee on the Rotation and Zoning of Offices for the forthcoming state congress. The committee suggested a system of zoning and rotation of offices that has been adhered to in previous years. By designating the chairmanship to Abia North, the state caucus also transferred all positions previously held by Abia South to Abia North. Likewise, all positions held by Abia North were transferred to Abia Central, and all positions held by Abia Central were transferred to Abia South.
The proposal for the zoning arrangement was put forth by Chief Chikwendu Kanu, a former Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, and was supported by the BoT Chairman of the PDP, Senator Adolphus Wabara. In expressing gratitude to the party’s state caucus, Okpara, a former Commissioner for Special Duties, stated that designating the chairmanship to Abia North was a significant development for the party.
The former commissioner emphasized that designating the chairmanship position to Abia North has reinstated justice and fairness within the party. “I can assure you that with this decision, justice and fairness have been restored within the party, paving the way for a return to victory,” Okpara said.
Describing Abia North as the stronghold of the PDP in Abia, Okpara noted that both Assembly seats in his local government of Bende are under PDP control. He pledged that if he is successful in securing the chairmanship position, he will lead the PDP to victory in the state in 2027.
