The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, stated on Friday that intelligence available to the Force indicates that foreign mercenaries are participating in the planned nationwide protest. Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Egbetokun advised all Nigerians to be cautious and consider their actions carefully before aligning themselves with any protest group.
Egbetokun remarked, “We have been closely monitoring the developments surrounding threats of protests. While some groups are advocating for violent demonstrations, reminiscent of recent events in Kenya, others are calling for peaceful protests. However, there are individuals promoting peaceful protests with underlying violent intentions, raising concerns about their sincerity. We have a history of violent protests in Nigeria, and it is unnecessary to look to other countries to understand the dangers of uncontrolled demonstrations. We commend those patriots who have opted out of the protests due to the apparent malicious motives and lack of awareness among those inciting violence. We acknowledge those who have voiced opposition to any form of protest at this crucial time, fearing that adversaries of our nation may be exploiting the situation. We confirm that their concerns are valid, as we have reliable intelligence indicating the involvement of foreign mercenaries in the planned protest. The Nigerian Police Force urges all citizens to exercise caution and carefully consider their involvement in any protest group.”
