As the Paris 2024 Olympic Games approach, Africa’s table tennis stars are gearing up for a historic campaign led by Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna and Egypt’s Omar Assar. Both players, ranked 19th and 22nd in the world respectively, have secured spots among the top 16 seeds, ensuring a direct entry into the second round of the men’s singles event at the South Paris Arena on July 28.

Quadri Aruna, a trailblazer who made history as the first African to reach the quarter-finals at the Rio 2016 Olympics, is set to make his fourth consecutive Olympic appearance. With his vast experience and stellar performances on the global stage, Aruna is aiming to clinch a podium finish in Paris, supported by his Nigerian compatriot Olajide Omotayo.
In the women’s singles, Nigeria’s contingent includes Offiong Edem and Fatimo Bello, alongside Cameroon’s Sarah Hanffou and Algeria’s Lynda Loghraibi, highlighting Africa’s strong representation in the competition.

The African lineup in the men’s singles event also features talents like Mehdi Boulussa from Algeria, Ibrahima Diaw representing Senegal, and Madagascar’s Fabio Rakotoarimanana, who will be the first player from his nation to compete in Olympic table tennis. Additionally, Saheed Idowu of Congo Brazzaville secured a tripartite invitation, further diversifying the continent’s presence on the global stage.
With the official seedings to be determined based on the July 16 ITTF world rankings, all eyes are on Aruna and Assar as they prepare to showcase their skills against the world’s best. The Paris Olympics promise an exhilarating display of talent and determination from Africa’s table tennis stars, as they aim to leave their mark and compete fiercely for Olympic glory.
