Rivers LG elections: PDP moves against Fubara, calls for suspension of elections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State is urging quick action to ensure the state government adheres to recent court rulings, warning that ignoring these decisions could lead to widespread disorder and unrest.

The party is concerned about the implications of non-compliance with the law, which they believe threatens the stability of the state.

On Thursday, the state chairman of the PDP, Aaron Chukwuemeka, made this urgent plea after delivering protest letters to local security agencies, including the police and the Department of State Services (DSS).

Chukwuemeka emphasized that the rule of law is essential for maintaining peace and order in Rivers State.

Members of the PDP, aligned with Minister Nyesom Wike, joined forces with supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) loyal to Tony Okocha to stage a protest against the upcoming local government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024.

The coalition of these political groups reflects a growing concern over electoral integrity and governance in the state.

The protesters gathered at the PDP office on Aba Road before marching to the offices of the DSS and the Rivers State Police Command Headquarters to voice their concerns about the elections.

Chukwuemeka stressed that the party is not against elections but is advocating for compliance with court rulings that prohibit the conduct of the elections under the current circumstances.

In his address, Chukwuemeka stated, “We are here to submit a petition from the PDP, led by myself, Hon. Aaron Chukwuemeka. Attached to this letter is a court order from the Federal High Court dated September 30, 2023.

This order clearly states that the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) should not hold the elections.

Furthermore, the court instructed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should not provide a voter register for these elections, and security agencies were told not to participate.”

He added, “As law-abiding citizens, we believe in justice and the rule of law. We are appealing to the governor and RSIEC to adhere to this judgment. No one is above the law. If the elections proceed despite the court order, we will not remain silent. We will take action to prevent the elections from happening.”

Chukwuemeka’s warnings underscore the PDP’s commitment to upholding the law and ensuring that citizens’ rights are protected.

He called on the security agencies to act decisively to prevent any actions that could lead to a breakdown of law and order.

In response to the protesters, Deputy Commissioner of Police Adepoju Olugbenga assured them that their letter would be delivered to the appropriate authorities for consideration.

News reports highlighted a significant police presence at the PDP office during the protest, reflecting the tense atmosphere surrounding the upcoming elections and the ongoing political tensions in Rivers State.

The PDP’s stand has sparked discussions about the importance of legal compliance in governance and the potential consequences of ignoring judicial authority, emphasizing the need for all parties involved to respect the rule of law to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
