Rivers LGA Election Will Proceed as Planned — Gov Fubara
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on WhatsappShare on EmailShare on Telegram

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has officially confirmed that the local government elections will take place on October 5, 2024.

He assured the public that there are no legal obstacles preventing this important electoral process from moving forward.

This announcement has generated a wave of enthusiasm among political parties, candidates, and voters as they prepare to select new local leaders.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, the governor made these remarks following an inspection of the Trans-Kalabari Road project.

He emphasized the need for all stakeholders to remain engaged and proactive as the election date approaches.

Fubara’s visit to the headquarters of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) was part of his commitment to ensure the election is conducted smoothly and transparently.

Governor Fubara highlighted the importance of this election, stating, “Our election will be held on October 5, 2024.

RSIEC has an order mandating them to conduct this election, and security agencies will provide the necessary support.”

He expressed confidence that with the proper preparations, this election would be one of the best in terms of fairness and transparency.

While addressing the staff at RSIEC, the governor voiced concerns about potential disruptions. Reports have indicated that certain individuals might attempt to interfere with the commission’s activities.

Fubara issued a stern warning to those involved, urging them to reconsider their actions for the greater good of Rivers State.

“The interest of Rivers State must be upheld. This commission belongs to the people, and I am here to ensure that it operates without interference,” he asserted.

Despite the positive outlook, the electoral process faces challenges due to conflicting court rulings.

A Federal High Court in Abuja recently barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from releasing the 2023 voters’ register to RSIEC.

This decision came after a Port Harcourt High Court ordered RSIEC to use the 2023 voters’ register for the upcoming local government elections.

The situation creates uncertainty, as RSIEC previously stated that it had already received the voters’ register from INEC.

The conflicting rulings could complicate the election preparations and raise questions about the legality of the voter list to be used.

Additionally, the Federal High Court ruling prevents the Inspector General of Police and the Department of State Services from providing security for the elections, which further complicates the situation.

As the election date approaches, Governor Fubara remains focused on ensuring a successful and peaceful electoral process.

He is determined to engage all relevant stakeholders to navigate these legal challenges and uphold the democratic process in Rivers State.

The governor’s commitment to transparency and fairness is crucial for restoring public confidence in the electoral system and ensuring that the voices of the people are heard.

Fubara’s leadership and proactive measures are essential in creating an environment where citizens feel empowered to participate in the democratic process.

With the election just around the corner, all eyes are on Rivers State to see how these challenges will be addressed and whether the elections will indeed reflect the will of the people.
