In a recent 2-2 draw between Manchester United and Liverpool, Man Utd legend Paul Scholes disagreed with Ruben Amorim’s assessment of Joshua Zirkzee’s decision during the closing moments of the game. Zirkzee had the chance to score but chose to pass the ball to Harry Maguire instead. Maguire, however, missed the chance by firing the ball over the crossbar.
Amorim defended Zirkzee’s decision, stating that he made the right choice by passing the ball to Maguire. He argued that Zirkzee could have shot, but the pass to Maguire was a better decision, even though the ball was slow and hard to control. However, Scholes disagreed, emphasizing that Zirkzee should have seized the opportunity himself. He compared the situation to Diego Forlan’s experience at United, suggesting that taking that chance could have made Zirkzee a hero.
Scholes acknowledged that Zirkzee was struggling with confidence, having been substituted early in the previous game against Newcastle. Despite this, Scholes remained hopeful that Zirkzee would learn from this experience and take more responsibility in future opportunities.
Scholes also praised United’s overall performance at Anfield, calling it a “proper performance.” He felt that their display was better than their previous victory over Manchester City, despite not winning the game. Scholes believes that this performance sets a standard for the team to follow going forward, and that the manager should now focus on selecting his strongest lineup and maintaining consistency.
