Spotify has unveiled the most-streamed podcasts across Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa for 2024, showcasing diverse listener preferences across the continent. In Nigeria, Apostle Femi Lazarus’s podcast took the top spot, alongside other popular shows like “Motivation Daily by Motiversity,” “Success Addicted Podcast,” “Apostle Joshua Selman,” and “The HonestBunch Podcast.”
South African listeners gravitated toward international and homegrown content, with “The Joe Rogan Experience” leading the list, followed by “The Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett,” Trevor Noah’s “What Now?” “Motivation Daily by Motivarsity,” and “Podcast and Chill with MacG.” Meanwhile, Kenya’s top picks included local favourites such as “The97sPodcast,” “So This Is Love,” and “The Mkurugenzi Podcast.”
According to Spotify’s Sub-Saharan Africa Podcast Manager, Ncebakazi Manzi, podcasting is thriving across the region, with over four billion minutes streamed in 2024. South Africa contributed more than half of this, while Nigeria stood out as the second-largest market, with 700 million minutes and the highest number of new podcast shows created.
Motivational and spiritual themes dominate listening trends across Nigeria and South Africa, reflecting a preference for podcasts that inspire personal growth, manage finances, and explore spirituality. In contrast, Kenya’s listeners leaned more toward relationship-based and conversational content, mirroring cultural nuances in each country’s consumption patterns.
Manzi emphasized that podcasting is becoming a crucial medium for storytelling in Africa, giving creators the platform to narrate their experiences and connect deeply with audiences. This growing trend underlines the increasing influence of podcasts as a form of entertainment and education across the continent.
