Tinubu Aide Calls for Democracy Day Emphasis: Misstep Should Not Overshadow Milestone Celebration

President Bola Tinubu’s inadvertent misstep while boarding the presidential parade vehicle at the Eagles Square in Abuja during the Democracy Day commemoration has sparked a plethora of reactions from the public.
The incident occurred as he approached the vehicle immediately after his arrival at the venue. Despite a momentary loss of balance, the President swiftly regained his composure with the assistance of his aide-de-camp (ADC) and proceeded with the event.
This occurrence has triggered a variety of responses from Nigerians, particularly on social media platforms.
In a statement shared on X, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed his sympathy for President Tinubu, describing the incident as unfortunate. “I offer my heartfelt sympathies to President Bola Tinubu in light of this unfortunate incident as he was preparing to review the parade on Democracy Day. I trust that he is in good health,” Atiku wrote.

Conversely, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, advised against taking pleasure in the mishap. Obi characterized the misstep as regrettable, stressing that there is no value in reveling in such occurrences.
“I was saddened to learn of President Tinubu’s unfortunate stumble today. I wish him a swift recovery. Finding joy in an accident that could happen to anyone serves no purpose. While we may have differing views on how to progress Nigeria, we must recognize our shared humanity. Let us remain focused on the issues that will pave the way for a new Nigeria.

“May this event remind us of our common humanity and underscore the need for compassion, empathy, and unity in our pursuit of a brighter future for our nation.”
In defense of Tinubu, the President’s media aide, Bayo Onanuga, pointed out that numerous world leaders, including President Joe Biden of the United States and former President Barack Obama, have also faced similar slips. Onanuga urged Nigerians not to lose sight of the significance of the Democracy Day celebration due to this incident.
“President Tinubu is not exempt from mishaps; he is as human as the rest of us. President Biden has encountered several stumbles in recent years, and even the youthful Barack Obama had his fair share of slips during his presidency.
“Political leaders are human beings vulnerable to accidents. A misstep should not overshadow the essence of the Democracy Day commemoration.”

Additionally, Olusegun Dada, Tinubu’s special assistant on social media, clarified that there were no health concerns with the President, emphasizing that it was simply a misstep.
A Northern group, Arewa Think Tank (ATTK), echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that falls are not exclusive to any particular individual, regardless of their social status.
The Chief Convener of ATTK, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, stressed that the President’s stumble should not be sensationalized, as it is a common occurrence among all human beings.
“It is not only President Tinubu, but anyone can experience a fall; it has happened to President Biden and Fidel Castro. Presidents are human beings, subject to human vulnerabilities.
“We can recount numerous incidents of such nature worldwide, including those involving Obama, Xi Jinping, Arap Moi, and Jomo Kenyatta.
“When prominent figures experience falls, it shatters the perception of invincibility. Bart Cammaerts, a professor at the London School of Economics, observed that these moments disrupt the carefully crafted public images of politicians. Critics often use such incidents to question the fitness and age of leaders, as seen in the case of Biden.
“Watching politicians in such vulnerable states can be strangely captivating. Dan Stevens, a professor at Exeter University, noted that these occurrences are compelling as they reveal a loss of control from individuals who typically manage their public image meticulously.
“Several notable political falls include Hillary Clinton (2016), Donald Trump (2020), Gerald Ford (1975), Xi Jinping (2019), Robert Mugabe (2015), Vladimir Putin (2019), Boris Johnson (2015), Helle Thorning-Schmidt (2015), and Margaret Thatcher (1982). These incidents often become fodder for public scrutiny and amusement.
“Therefore, those reveling in President Tinubu’s misstep are acting against the interest of the nation. They must wait for their own time, as Tinubu is in good health and diligently working towards elevating Nigeria to greater heights,” the group asserted.
