President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Abba Abubakar Aliyu as the substantive Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), a move aimed at bolstering Nigeria’s efforts to expand electricity access to rural communities.
The announcement was made on Friday through a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President. Aliyu, who has been acting as the agency’s Managing Director since March 2024, officially assumes the role with effect from January 23, 2025, for an initial four-year tenure.
With over two decades of experience in the energy sector, Aliyu is expected to leverage his expertise to accelerate the federal government’s rural electrification initiatives. His extensive work across power, water resources, and transportation sectors positions him as a key figure in implementing the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda on sustainable energy.
His leadership in both the on-grid and off-grid electricity sectors has been instrumental in advancing Nigeria’s electrification projects.
Before taking up leadership at REA, Aliyu held several strategic positions, including Head of the Project Management Unit at the Nigeria Electrification Project, General Manager of Corporate Services, Projects, and Research, and Deputy General Manager at the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading PLC (NBET).
