President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to conduct a thorough screening and subsequent confirmation of four individuals who have been appointed as esteemed board members of the Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC.This request from the President was eloquently conveyed in a letter that was gracefully read aloud by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during the esteemed plenary session that took place on Wednesday.
The distinguished individuals who have been appointed as board members of the SEC are as follows: Emomotimi Agama, Frana Chukwuogor, Bola Ajomale, and Samiya Hassan-Usman. Among these appointees, Agama has been designated as the Director-General, while Chukwuogor will be serving as the Executive Commissioner responsible for Legal and Enforcement matters within the esteemed Security and Exchange Commission.
Furthermore, Ajomale has been appointed as the Executive Commissioner overseeing Operations, and Hassan-Usman has been appointed as the Executive Commissioner in charge of Corporate Services. The President, in his letter, meticulously explained that these appointments were made in strict adherence to the stipulations outlined in section (1) of the Investment and Security Act of 2007.
In a show of procedural decorum, the Senate President conscientiously referred this esteemed request to the Senate Committee on Capital Markets, with a directive for them to diligently furnish a comprehensive report to the Senate within a succinct period of two weeks.Back in April, President Tinubu gracefully sanctioned the appointment of seven distinguished individuals as members of the SEC, pending the Senate’s confirmation. However, only four of these names were formally transmitted to the Senate for their esteemed confirmation. President Tinubu, in his wisdom, chose not to provide specific reasons for the exclusion of the other three professionals.By: Nwakaji Peace Martins
