The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed a tragic incident involving a boat carrying approximately 300 passengers that capsized on the River Niger near Jebba Dam, in the Gbajibo community of Mokwa Local Government Area.

The accident occurred on the evening of October 1, 2024, around 8:30 PM, causing widespread concern and mobilizing emergency response teams.

Initial reports indicate that the boat was traveling from Mundi community to Gbajibo, where many passengers were heading to participate in the Maulid celebration, a significant religious event honoring the birth of the Prophet Muhammad.

The majority of those on board were women and children, making the situation particularly distressing for families in the area.

As soon as the incident was reported, NSEMA swiftly launched a rescue operation. Director General Abdullahi Baba Arah stated that the agency is closely monitoring the search efforts and coordinating with various local organizations.

These include the State Ministry of Transport, the Mokwa Local Government Emergency Committee, and brave local divers who have volunteered their time and skills to assist in the rescue operations.

The quick response from community members has been instrumental, with over 150 individuals successfully rescued so far.

Witnesses reported chaotic scenes as the boat began to capsize. Many passengers struggled to stay afloat in the chilly waters, while others were seen clinging to debris.

Local divers and volunteers rushed to the scene to provide immediate assistance, and their efforts have undoubtedly saved lives.

NSEMA has emphasized the importance of safety on waterways, especially during large gatherings where many people travel together.

The agency is reviewing safety protocols to prevent future incidents and to ensure that all vessels comply with necessary regulations.

They are urging boat operators to take extra precautions, particularly during busy events.

The ongoing search and rescue operation is being conducted with the utmost urgency, as rescue teams work tirelessly to locate any remaining survivors.

Officials are also providing support to the families of those affected, offering counseling and assistance during this challenging time.

Community leaders have expressed their gratitude to the volunteers and emergency responders for their dedication and bravery.

“It is heartwarming to see the community come together in times of crisis,” said a local leader. “We hope and pray for the safe return of all those still missing.”

NSEMA has pledged to keep the public informed as more updates become available.

The agency continues to monitor the situation closely and is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents in the region.

As the search efforts progress, the community remains hopeful for the safe recovery of all individuals involved in this tragic event.
