Incoming U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his proposal for a merger between the United States and Canada following the unexpected resignation of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trump suggested that such a union would eliminate tariffs, significantly reduce taxes, and bolster Canada’s security.
“If Canada merged with the US, there would be no tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be totally secure from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships constantly surrounding them,” Trump said in a social media post on Monday, adding, “Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!”
Trudeau announced his resignation after nearly a decade in power, citing internal dissent within his Liberal Party. He plans to remain as a caretaker prime minister until a new leader is selected. His decision comes amid a decline in popularity and increasing calls from party insiders for fresh leadership.
The timing of Trudeau’s resignation coincides with heightened trade tensions. Trump had previously vowed to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian imports, a move Trudeau had pledged to counter with retaliatory measures. These developments suggest potential economic conflicts as Trump assumes office later this month.
The resignation marks the end of Trudeau’s tenure, which began in 2015. Initially known for his charisma and the political legacy of his father, Pierre Trudeau, his leadership faced mounting challenges, including declining support from party allies and voters.
