The University of Abuja has categorically denied allegations of bias and irregularities in its ongoing Vice Chancellor selection process. This follows protests by senior professors, who described the appointment procedure as flawed, and reports of stakeholder tensions since the departure of former VC, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’Allah, in July.
Acting VC, Prof. Aisha Maikudi, who has been at the helm for six months, faced criticisms regarding her eligibility, but the university affirmed her qualifications and accomplishments. In a statement by Habib Yakoob, Acting Director of Information and University Relations, the university dismissed claims that Maikudi was being unfairly favored, labeling such accusations as baseless and divisive.
The university reassured stakeholders that the selection process adheres strictly to the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, emphasising transparency and merit-based evaluation. “Efforts to malign her candidacy are unwarranted and distract from the Council’s mandate to select a competent leader for the institution,” the statement read.
Addressing other allegations, Yakoob clarified that no journalist was detained during a campus visit, and no protests disrupted Senate meetings. The university also emphasised its commitment to fostering positive media relationships and maintaining the safety of its community.
