Vice President Shettima Praises Akure Kingdom’s Rich Heritage, Unity, and Cultural Legacy

Vice President Kashim Shettima, during a visit to Akure, the capital of Ondo State, praised the Akure Kingdom for its enduring cultural heritage and its significant contribution to Nigeria’s history. Shettima made the remarks while paying a courtesy visit to the paramount ruler of Akure, His Royal Majesty, Oba Ogunlade Aladelusi (Odundun II), at the royal palace.

The Vice President’s visit was part of his participation in the grand finale rally supporting Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s re-election bid ahead of the Ondo State gubernatorial election slated for Saturday. Shettima, in his remarks, praised the Akure Kingdom as a shining example of how culture and heritage can shape a society, noting that Akure had maintained its cultural and historical integrity for centuries. He pointed to the 850-year-old palace, a testament to the resilience and enduring influence of Akure’s traditional leadership, as a symbol of the kingdom’s rich history and ongoing contribution to Nigeria’s collective cultural journey.

“Akure stands proudly as a testament to the greatness that lies in heritage and unity,” Shettima stated. “This place of gathering and governance, preserved across centuries, serves as a pillar of cultural integrity and continuity. The enduring structure of this palace, a monument over 850 years old, is a reminder that Akure’s strength and grace remain constant through the generations.”

In a moment of reverence for the royal lineage, the Vice President acknowledged the legacy of Akure’s rulers, expressing deep admiration for Oba Aladelusi’s leadership. He remarked on the historic significance of the palace, noting the long history that spans from the time of Oba Asodeboyede in 1150 AD, who founded the palace, to the reign of Oba Ogunja in the 16th century, who elevated the title of Deji to a symbol of strength and nobility.

Shettima went on to highlight the important role that Oba Aladelusi plays in preserving Akure’s history and guiding its people through times of peace and prosperity. He acknowledged that under the leadership of the monarch, the Akure Kingdom remains an integral part of Nigeria’s cultural tapestry, with the people continuing to thrive in unity and strength.

“Your Majesty, as you lead the people of Akure today, know that this kingdom remains an inspiration to our nation,” Shettima said. “Your forefathers, notably Oba Afunbiowo II and Oba Adesida I, led with vision and valour, while you, Odundun II, continue to safeguard Akure’s legacy with a peace that permeates this land and guides its people.”In his address, Shettima also extended his admiration to the traditional ruler for his commitment to maintaining peace within the kingdom. He pointed out that the kingdom’s success in upholding its traditions and cultural integrity amidst the challenges of modernity was a clear indication of the wisdom and resilience of its leadership.

Shettima prayed that Oba Aladelusi’s reign, like those of his ancestors, would continue to be a source of pride, strength, and unity for the people of Akure and the nation as a whole. The Vice President also spoke to the historical importance of Akure, recognising the legacy of past monarchs, including those who elevated the kingdom’s prominence within Nigeria’s political and cultural landscape. Shettima remarked that the traditional institution in Akure had played an essential role in Nigeria’s journey toward unity, offering a model for other regions to emulate.Responding to the Vice President’s words, Oba Aladelusi expressed his gratitude for Shettima’s visit and the recognition of Akure’s cultural and historical significance.

He also took the opportunity to express his appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for approving the establishment of a teaching hospital in Akure, which had been a long-standing need for the state capital. Akure was the only state capital in the country without a teaching hospital, and the recent approval was seen as a significant development for the people of the kingdom.

Oba Aladelusi also commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for approving a five percent monthly allocation for traditional rulers in the state, a gesture aimed at strengthening the role of traditional institutions in governance. He urged the people of Akure to support the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming governorship election, emphasising the importance of voting for continuity and development in the state.
