The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has strongly cautioned against pushing former President Goodluck Jonathan into the 2027 presidential election. Wike emphasized that those promoting Jonathan’s return are acting hypocritically and could plunge the country into fresh political instability.
Speaking on Thursday night as a guest on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Wike noted that the same politicians who abandoned Jonathan in 2015 now want to lure him back into a divisive race.
PDP Chieftains Consider Jonathan
Former President Jonathan, who governed Nigeria under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 2010 to 2015, lost re-election to the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Muhammadu Buhari. Recently, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed revealed that Jonathan is among potential PDP candidates being considered for the party’s 2027 ticket.
Other PDP governors and party stakeholders have also suggested that Jonathan could emerge as a unifying candidate for the opposition.
Wike Condemns “One-Term Presidency” Plot
Reacting to these suggestions, Wike declared that advocating Jonathan for a so-called “one-term presidency” is deceptive and dangerous.
“Anybody saying Jonathan should return because he will only do one term is only looking for a crisis,” Wike warned.
“These are the same people who abandoned him in 2015. Why now? Jonathan has made a name for himself globally, and they just want to drag him into unnecessary conflict,” he added.
Call for Political Stability
The FCT minister argued that reviving Jonathan’s candidacy under false pretenses could threaten Nigeria’s fragile political balance. He urged party leaders to focus on stability and genuine leadership instead of recycling old strategies.
