Xavi Hernandez bid farewell as the coach of Barcelona with a 2-1 victory over Sevilla on Sunday to conclude the La Liga season. He cautioned his successor that the upcoming role would be challenging.
Despite finishing the season without any silverware, the Catalans managed to secure a win in Xavi’s final game in charge following his dismissal by President Joan Laporta on Friday. Just a few weeks prior, Barcelona had announced that Xavi would stay on for the next season, despite his initial intention to resign in the summer, as stated back in January.

Having been appointed in November 2021, Xavi guided Barcelona to the Spanish title in the previous season. However, this season, his team fell short by 10 points behind Real Madrid, who clinched the league title. It is anticipated that German coach Hansi Flick will be named as Xavi’s successor next week.
Xavi highlighted the challenges that lie ahead for the next coach, emphasizing the complexity of managing a club like Barcelona, compounded by the challenging financial circumstances. He expressed his belief that the efforts of the team under his leadership were not duly recognized, especially considering the adverse circumstances they had to overcome.

Barcelona struggled in key matches this season, suffering defeats against Real Madrid, Girona, and Villarreal. Nonetheless, they ended the season on a positive note with a victory at Sevilla’s Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium. Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring for Barcelona, but Youssef En-Nesyri equalized for Sevilla. Quique Sanchez Flores, Sevilla’s coach, will also be departing at the end of the season.
One of Xavi’s accomplishments during his tenure was providing opportunities to young talents such as Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsi, and Fermin Lopez. Lopez, a 21-year-old midfielder, scored a crucial goal for Barcelona with a precise strike from outside the box in the second half. After his goal, he embraced Xavi in appreciation for the coach’s dedication and support.

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen commended Xavi for his professionalism and expressed gratitude for his guidance and friendship over the years. The departure of Xavi marks the end of an era for Barcelona, with fans showing their discontent through protests against the board before the game, highlighting the disappointing season that culminated in a 14th-place finish for Sevilla.
