Directly cursing someone online is a crime that is punished by law, according to Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force. Adejobi claims that this type of behaviour constitutes cyberbullying, which transcends the right to free speech or criticism.
“Directly cursing someone online is cyberbullying, not a form of criticism or freedom,” he said.
Felix Abayomi, under the handle #felabayomi, questioned Adejobi’s post on X by writing, “When did it become illegal to rain curses? I eagerly await the day when these laws will be contested.
“If that were the case, then all Nigerians should have been in prison by now,” retorted another user, who used the handle #kingkhone4real to tweet anonymously.
“You are absolutely right, sir; raining curses and engaging in cyberbullying is not freedom of expression but an act of harm,” #omoopee_ said in support of Adejobi’s position.
“Everyone needs to learn how to express themselves in a responsible manner.”
