The letter that Governor Siminalayi Fubara sent to the Rivers State House of Assembly requesting a meeting with the lawmakers to discuss the application of the Supreme Court’s ruling on the state’s political affairs has been deemed “useless” by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike.
This was revealed by Wike, the immediate past governor of the oil-rich South-South state, in an interview with reporters in Abuja on Wednesday.
“You have had a frosty relationship with an arm of government. If you are a good politician, will you go and write a letter? Is it by writing a letter signed by the SSG? What an insult! Is it how it is done? If you are a politician, you know what to do.
“You want to play to the gallery, which is rubbish. All these letters are useless; you are not sincere; you are playing to the gallery,” he said.
Speaker Martins Amaewhule and other Rivers Assembly lawmakers are not Fubara’s boys, according to the PDP powerbroker, and they deserve some respect.
Wike has the support of Amaewhule and more than 20 members of the House.
According to Wike, Fubara ought to have called Amaewhule and his staff and set up a time and date for a meeting rather than sending out a public letter inviting members of the House.
A number of rulings regarding the political climate in the oil-rich South-South state were handed down by the Supreme Court on Friday, February 28, 2025.
In the judgement delivered by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye, the five-man panel of the court unanimously dismissed the cross-appeal filed by Fubara challenging the validity of the House of Assembly presided over by Martin Amaewhule as the Speaker.
