Former Ekiti Governor Ayodele Fayose met with ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Sunday.
Fayose, who arrived at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, was received by aides of the former president before proceeding to ex-president’s private residence, where a closed-door meeting took place.
Although the details of their discussions were not disclosed, sources close to the meeting described it as “a private visit” that lasted over an hour.
Ahead of upcoming elections in 2027, the former Ekiti governor, known for his outspoken political style and criticism of national authorities, has recently called for unity among southern political actors.
However, his meeting with Obasanjo has sparked political speculation at a time when national reconciliation efforts and the future of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, are gaining momentum.
The former governor is known ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who works for President Bola Tinubu, despite being in the PDP. Fayose’s visit to ex-president Obasanjo and his move to unify southern political leaders, leaves room for speculations if he is on a mission to consolidate southern base for Tinubu or truly concerned with PDP’s unity.
However, as at press time, neither ex president Obasanjo or Fayose has made a public statement as regards the meeting.
