The news that Adeleke leaves PDP has reshaped political conversations in Osun State. Governor Ademola Adeleke confirmed his defection during a recent interview, explaining that he could no longer manage the internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Governor Ademola Adeleke said he did everything possible to keep the PDP united. However, he explained that the crisis in the party became worse every day. He made these remarks on Wednesday during an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television.
His statement came a day after he resigned from the PDP and formally joined the Accord Party ahead of the 2026 governorship election. Not long after joining the new party, Adeleke emerged as its governorship candidate during the primary election held on Wednesday.
Speaking during the interview, Adeleke said he appreciates the PDP for giving him the platform to serve as a senator and later as governor. He noted that he recently celebrated three years in office and had hoped to resolve the issues within the PDP. However, according to him, things kept getting worse despite his efforts.
He added that he has deep love for Osun State and wants to continue serving the people. Yet, since a political platform is required to contest elections, he had no option but to join the Accord Party. Therefore, his defection was, in his view, necessary to protect his political future and maintain stability.
He said:
“I personally tried my best to balance the crisis in the party, but everything seems to be falling apart every day. Had it been one does not need a platform to secure a nomination, I would have remained in the PDP. But one needs a platform to contest an election, hence my defection to the Accord Party.”
