Breaking: Iconic Musician Onyeka Onwenu Dies At 72

News reaching us breaks the devastating passing of the iconic Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress, Ms. Onyeka Onwenu, at the age of 72. According to reports, Ms. Onwenu reportedly passed away during the night of Tuesday, following a performance at an event in Banana Island, Lagos.

It is reported she collapsed after singing at the birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, the owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, and was subsequently pronounced dead at a hospital in Victoria Island. While her family is yet to confirm the news of her passing, the tragic loss has left a deep void in the entertainment industry.

In addition to her remarkable musical career, Ms. Onwenu also made significant contributions to politics. She served as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and later as the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development. Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, Ms. Onwenu rose to fame in the 1980s with the release of her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981.

Throughout her career, she released numerous albums and singles, including the popular song “One Love.” In addition to her music ventures, Ms. Onwenu also showcased her acting talents in several Nollywood films, earning accolades for her versatility and talent.

Her pioneering efforts in the Nigerian music industry have earned her widespread recognition and numerous awards. We mourn the passing of this legendary artist and political figure, whose legacy will forever be remembered in Nigeria and beyond. Chief Onyeka Onwenu was appointed as the Executive Director of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture in the year 2013.

Subsequently, she assumed the role of Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development in 2016. Mrs. Onwenu has been honored for her significant contributions to Nigerian society, notably being conferred with the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.
