David Mark Resigns From PDP, Cites Internal Crisis and Leadership Failure

David Mark resigns from PDP, ending decades of service to a party he helped establish in 1998.

In a letter dated June 27, David Mark resigns from PDP, citing unresolved internal disputes and leadership breakdowns.

The letter, addressed to PDP leaders in Otukpo Ward, Benue State, surfaced online early Wednesday morning.

Mark described his decision as difficult but necessary due to the PDP’s failure to resolve deepening internal conflicts.

He said despite remaining loyal after the 2015 loss, the party leadership failed to correct foundational political derailments.

In the letter, David Mark resigns from PDP and blames irreconcilable differences for finally forcing his exit.

“I remained the last man standing when others defected. But today, the party no longer reflects our values.”

He emphasized his efforts in rebuilding the PDP, saying those efforts returned the party to national political relevance.

Mark expressed disappointment that persistent leadership failures had crippled the PDP’s ability to function as a national opposition.

Sources say his resignation could trigger more exits as prominent figures lose faith in the party’s direction.

Mark also served as Senate President from 2007 to 2015 and remained a top PDP power broker afterward.

His departure has stirred concern across PDP ranks, especially in Benue State, his political stronghold.

Political analysts say his resignation highlights the growing instability within the party as 2027 elections approach.

So far, PDP has not issued any official response to the resignation or its possible political implications.

Observers believe David Mark’s resignation could affect the PDP’s strategic preparations ahead of the 2027 general election.

The former military governor turned politician noted that the recent internal conflicts had subjected the PDP to public ridicule.

“Recent events marked by deepening divisions, persistent leadership crisis, and irreconcilable differences have reduced the party to a shadow of its former self, subjecting it to public ridicule,” he said.

“After wide consultations with my family, friends, and political associates, I have resolved to join the National Coalition of Political Opposition Movement in Nigeria, as part of the collective effort to rescue our nation and preserve our hard-earned democracy,” he added.

Mark has been a core loyalist of the PDP, having not defected to another party since 1998. This is his first defection to another political party since he joined the PDP.

Mark has joined other prominent politicians across the nation, in the opposition coalition to unseat president Bola Tinubu in 2027 election.
