The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved ₦68.7 billion for electricity projects for universities and hospitals across Nigeria.
The Minister noted that many existing institutions still struggle with irregular electricity, relying on diesel and costly local alternatives.
To reverse this trend, the government will execute engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts that prioritize renewable energy sources. this will boast electricity projects for universities and hospitals
Adelabu said earlier phases of the programme have shown great success with solar projects at key universities and military institutions.
Some completed examples include the University of Niger (12 MW solar) and Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (8 MW capacity).
Other beneficiaries include the University of Abuja, Nigerian Defence Academy (2.6 MW solar), and Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi.
He stated that several of these were done with assistance from international partners like the World Bank, ensuring efficiency and sustainability.
These new efforts, he said, mark a serious attempt by the Tinubu administration to address power challenges in priority institutions.
