In response to Nigeria’s escalating security challenges, the Federal Government has allocated an additional N14 billion towards the procurement of military equipment between September and October 2024. This brings the total spending for military hardware to N77.6 billion in the first ten months of 2024.
The Defence Ministry has continued to prioritize the purchase of essential military assets, with N4 billion spent in September for critical combat equipment and N6.4 billion disbursed by the Nigerian Air Force in October for defense-related purchases. The government’s commitment to addressing insecurity through enhanced military capabilities aligns with earlier efforts, including the N63.6 billion spent in the first half of the year.
Over the past four years, the Federal Government has significantly increased military spending, with N231.27 billion allocated for arms and ammunition between 2020 and 2023. This surge in spending reflects a growing urgency to equip the nation’s security forces as they confront persistent threats across the country.
Despite the large sums spent, there have been continued concerns about the effectiveness of Nigeria’s military procurement strategy, with experts calling for better management and transparency in how these funds are utilized. Nevertheless, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, has defended the spending, emphasizing the necessity of foreign currency expenditure for military hardware, given Nigeria’s lack of local arms manufacturing capabilities.
The government’s commitment to national security remains a key focus as it strives to equip the military with the necessary tools to combat terrorism, insurgency, and other security threats, aiming for long-term stability and peace in the region.
