‘Forget Abia Guber in 2027’ ex-Rep Member Replies NASS Deputy Speaker Kalu

Linus Okorie, a former member of the House of Representatives, has urged Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House, to reconsider his bid for the Abia State governorship in the 2027 election. Okorie’s comments follow Kalu’s recent declaration that Abia State Governor Alex Otti would be the last Labour Party (LP) governor and his intention to prevent any Labour Party or other party from winning the governorship in 2027.

In a statement issued in response to Kalu’s remarks, Okorie, who previously represented Ivo, Ohaozara, and Onicha in Ebonyi State and was the LP’s 2023/2024 bye-election senatorial candidate, expressed his disapproval of Kalu’s approach. Okorie’s statement addressed several key points:

• Historical Leadership: Okorie emphasized the significant history of Igbo leadership in Nigeria’s National Assembly. He recalled notable leaders such as Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, who was the first Nigerian President of the Senate, and Prince Nwafor Orizu, who served as Senate President until 1966. He also mentioned other prominent Igbo figures like Rt. Hon. Edwin Ume-Ezeoke, who was Speaker of the House of Representatives, and subsequent leaders such as Senator Ken Nnamani and Senator Anyim Pius Anyim. Okorie highlighted that these leaders conducted themselves with respect and dignity, representing the Igbo people with honor.

• Current Governance: Okorie praised Governor Alex Otti for his impactful leadership in Abia State. He contrasted Otti’s governance with the previous poor performance in the state, noting that under Otti’s leadership, there has been a clear improvement and renewed hope among the people of Abia. Okorie emphasized that Otti’s administration has brought positive change and is a testament to the benefits of good governance.
• Political Strategy and Conduct: Okorie advised Kalu to focus on his campaign efforts and work on earning the support of the people rather than resorting to threats or attacks on Otti. He pointed out that such tactics are unlikely to be effective and could harm Kalu’s own political prospects. Okorie stressed that Kalu should use his current position responsibly and work towards genuinely appealing to voters.
• Nigerian Political Awareness: Okorie underscored that Nigerians are increasingly aware of political strategies and are not easily swayed by threats or deceit. He warned Kalu that the electorate would not tolerate attempts to manipulate or coerce them into accepting certain political outcomes.

Okorie urged Kalu to focus on his role as Deputy Speaker and to represent his constituents with integrity. He advised Kalu to respect the political choices of the Igbo people and to avoid undermining the progress made under Governor Otti’s leadership.
