Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has urged the people of the Southeast and concerned Nigerians to avoid attributing the ongoing detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Isiguzoro instead singled out South East governors, senators, and other political figures, holding them responsible for impeding Kanu’s release.
In a statement released in Abakiliki, Ebonyi State, Isiguzoro absolved President Tinubu of any blame, stressing that the essential commitments of security and collaboration from South East leaders needed to secure Kanu’s release had not been forthcoming.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo urges our Igbo compatriots and concerned Nigerians to focus their attention on the South East governors rather than President Tinubu concerning the escalating security challenges in the region and the prolonged detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
“South East governors and certain Igbo leaders have failed to provide the necessary assurances required to explore political avenues for Kanu’s release,”Isiguzoro remarked.
He criticized the actions of some regional leaders, alleging that they were leveraging Kanu’s incarceration for personal and political gain, thereby prolonging his confinement for self-serving motives ahead of the 2027 elections.
Isiguzoro also implored prominent Igbo figures such as Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Pa Ebitu Ukiwe, and Senator Ike Nwachukwu to collaborate and furnish the federal government with the essential assurances regarding Kanu’s future behavior upon release.
