Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has ordered a pension increment and a minimum pension guarantee for retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). The directive follows protests in Abuja by retired police officers demanding improved benefits and removal from the CPS.
Tinubu also mandated the immediate rollout of free healthcare for low-income retirees nationwide, aiming to address long-standing welfare gaps.
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said in a Wednesday statement that the President acted after receiving a detailed briefing from Omolola Oloworaran, Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom).
According to Onanuga, Tinubu instructed PenCom to urgently resolve the persistent police pension issue, stressing that officers who serve and protect Nigeria deserve to retire with dignity and financial security.
Oloworaran briefed the President on ongoing measures to safeguard pension fund value against inflation and economic pressures. She also revealed plans to introduce foreign currency contributions, enabling Nigerians in the Diaspora to participate in the pension system.
The President endorsed the proposed reforms, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusive economic growth and stronger social protection for all Nigerians.
The PenCom DG outlined several upcoming initiatives designed to enhance retiree welfare, expand pension coverage, and ensure sustainable payouts.
This announcement comes shortly after police retirees staged demonstrations in Abuja to demand exclusion from the CPS, citing inadequate benefits and rising living costs.
